This concert will be the final Queensland performance of Maestro Alondra de la Parra, the Music Director of Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Alondra has wowed audiences in Queensland with her dynamic conducting, warm personality and dedication to bring orchestra music to as broad an audience as possible. The performance will include British pianist, Paul Lewis, a master of the instrument, performing the ever-popular Grieg Piano Concerto, accompanied by Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnol and finishing off with the mighty Symphony No.5 by Tchaikovsky, a spectacular and rousing crowd-pleaser of a symphony.
Be swept away to Spain in Rapsodie espagnol. Spanish melodies, rhythm and popular dances Habanera and Malaguena framed by ravishing orchestral colour reveal Ravel’s fascination with the region. Passionate and poetic, Grieg’s piano concerto is a gem. Soloist and orchestra are woven into a luxurious coherence. After a crisp orchestral cue, the soloist executes a torrent of descending chords. A wistful oboe solo is passed to the piano and reveals the close alliance between soloist and orchestra. Delight in Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony. With its romantic tunes, striking instrumental colours, balletic eloquence, and explosive peaks there’s plenty to enjoy.
