ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Floras of Gondwanan Heritage explores Gondwanan lineage plants of the World Heritage Rainforest of Australia through textiles, works on paper and video by Queensland biochrome artist Renata Buziak.

Extraordinary and captivating flora images encapsulate the gorgeous colours of the Australian World Heritage listed Gondwanan Rainforests located in the Scenic Rim.

In 2022, Binna Burra Lodge invited Renata to create her signature biochrome images on the Binna Burra Cultural Landscape, as the first Artist-in-Residence in the legacy of Vida Lahey, a prominent Queensland artist (1882 – 1968).

Located on the Yugambeh language groups’ country, in the World Heritage area of Woonoongoora / Lamington National Park - Binna Burra allows visitors to experience unique flora, of which ancestral lineages go back to Gondwanaland millions of years ago.

During her residency, Renata created a new series of biochrome images of rainforest flora, with focus on Gondwanan lineage plants, such as Nothofagus moorei (Antarctic Beech) and Callicoma serratifolia (Black Wattle).

The biochrome image-making process developed by Renata, through her art-science research, is based on the fusion of organic and photographic materials.

This process fuses plant samples and photographic emulsions over a period of time, allowing organic decomposition to transform both materials into new, abstract, yet often accurately depicted, images of plants.

In essence, Renata Buziak is a biochrome photomedia artist, researcher and educator helping people to reconnect with nature through art-science research.

ABOUT BLOOM COLLECTIVE

Bloom Collective, featuring Jan Baker-Finch, Vicki Kelleher, Vanessa Tomlinson, Erik Griswold and Renata Buziak, collaborates on many multi-disciplinary projects which are site specific. The performance Gondwanan Echoes has been inspired by Renata’s biochrome images of Gondwana lineage plants, research of the plants and their environment, along with the other member’s research and experiences of the place. It also celebrates cultural heritage, environment, artistic and scientific significance at Binna Burra, located within the World Heritage Gondwana Rainforest of Australia. View Bloom Collective in performance at Binna Burra
