ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
PAPER is an exhibition of contemporary artworks by Heather Matthew and Zela Bissett sharing the artists' personal journeys of home, resilience, hope and recovery through the fascinating medium of handmade paper.
Join us as we explore their stories of fragility and strength reflected in the alluring tactile qualities of handmade paper.
This body of work about paper as a narrative of resilience, hope and creative validation. As a paper artist I use the fragility and strength of paper as a metaphor for new ways to consider our capacity for resilience. My artworks tell stories of human occupation and an environment in crisis from bushfires, floods and socio/political dispossession. more

The series of works in this exhibition concern the impacts of extreme weather on a place very close to my heart - K’gari, the beautiful island also called Fraser Island. It was a place of joy and plenty for the Butchulla people who spent a large part of each year there until colonisation. As a high schooler in the 1970s I knew a man called John Sinclair who knew Butchulla people well and shared their love for the beautiful island, devoting most of his life to preventing the ravages of sand-mining, logging and overuse. more
