REGENERATION
WE RISE. WE ARE STRONG. 3 SEPTEMBER - 22 OCTOBER 2021
|
REGENERATION new life rises from the ashes that was once black and bare our experience connected us deeply as we gather around the fire to share we rise we are strong we listen we belong
The Wildfires that raged across our Scenic Rim communities in Spring 2019, left homes, farmland, bushland, business, and spirits charred. |
|
These fires were the opening chapter of what became a national narrative of unprecedented fires and devastation across 2019-2020 black summer.
After the fire, communities were firstly numb with shock and grief over what had been lost, but then more recently this has been transformed into a determination to both rebuild and honour resilience as a way to learn from the experience.
Over 70 artworks ranging from paintings, drawings, poetry, video, pottery, illustrations, wire sculptures and installations are featured in the Regeneration exhibition.
Works are by sixteen Scenic Rim artists:
Adi Brown, Dave Groom, Jessica Brown, Claire Beck, Sam Campbell, Kuweni Dias Mendis, Janine Healy, Gary Bowler, Paula Peeters, Deborah McLachlan, Twisted Murph, Nikki & Mat Tervo, Tanya Munster, Zoe Kearney, Magnus Kennedy, Ben Werner and Yannick Blattner from All City Walls.
The lived experience of fire ignited a deeper understanding of human connection and belonging to place. This sense of belonging and connection has been celebrated through community initiatives and projects such as the Regeneration - Bushfire Creative Recovery Project.
Not only are our communities, homes and local infrastructure recovering, the bushland which was blackened is now showing signs of rejuvenation. Bright green shoots are springing from the ground, leaves are emerging on what we thought were burnt out husks of trees. Nature is reasserting her endless bounty and resilience. This is indeed worth celebrating.
Regeneration is an exhibition that is both witness and celebration to recovery while paying respect to the transformational quality of fire. Local artists impacted by Black Summer will be showcasing their work under the umbrella of regeneration and tackling themes of belonging and regreening, recovery, resilience, and regeneration of our human and nonhuman communities.
